the struggle bus

When your young resident (or intern, or rookie pastor in their first three years of ministry) is struggling and thinking about bailing it can get stressful on everyone.

Questions to Ask Ourselves:
// Is there something we need to learn here?
Residency, and having Gen Z on our team, is a two-way street of coaching and learning.

// Are we committed to growth and success?
A resident's first year, or a full-timer's first three years, is prime time growth time. Are we in it for them to win it? it took us a year+ to just find them. The sunk costs here are tremendous. Now is the time to dig down and find new motivations and levels of grit from those who should know better.

// Are we giving them enough wins?
Yes, ministry is always different than we imagined it. Is she getting little wins? Are they getting joy from being on this team?

// Are the 7 Must-Have ingredients present? Which needs to be turned up, added in, or focused on?

Language to Strike from Our Venacular:
// "He doesn't get it."

// "She's not bought into our vision."

// "Perhaps this isn't for him."

// "She never really had it in the first place."

Questions to Ask Them:
// "How can i get you to stay?"

// "How can I help you do your thing?"

// "What has changed?"
Look back at the questionnaire they filled out and the things that they said just a few months ago - read it to them. You said __________ (positive things about calling and why they wanted to do this) and now you are saying ______ (they arent called, they don't feel something) what is different?

// Don't think about a life of calling, or 3 years, or a two year residency or even 18 month goals...instead ask them "How can I help you across the finish line today/tomorrow/this week?"

If you have an intern, resident, or full-timer in their first three years consider engaging in coaching for either their boss or them through Leadership Pathway.
