The following is a Q&A with Executive Pastor David Postier:
What are your greatest hopes and dreams for the next couple of years for your church?
Our hopes and dreams for the next couple of years are to continue leading people from every generation to the full life that Jesus offers them. We want to see many people surrender their lives to Jesus and get baptized in his name. We want to grow alongside the community around us in reaching them with the hope of the gospel message.
Why did you choose to do a residency & what are you hopeful will happen through this process?
As a church who heavily emphasizes reaching people from every generation, we want to help develop someone younger into an effective leader for the Kingdom of God. We believe this residency offers some incredibly practical opportunities for gaining ministry experience while developing oneself as a leader. We hope to offer someone practical ministry experience while helping meet some of the most pressing needs at the church.
What is it like to work on staff there?
Working on staff at VVCC is like nothing else! We have a great culture here of “work hard, rest hard.” Whether it’s during Sunday morning services or weekly staff meetings, we’re all hard at work doing various tasks in our respective ministry areas. Then we rest hard and spend time with our families or even one other outside of the office (most of us are as much friends as we are coworkers). We also do quarterly staff outings for to enjoy some fun, fellowship, and food! The culture here is fun and everyone’s driven by the same message of building the Kingdom of God. You’ll fit right in!
Does your church’s website state the mission, vision, values and key distinctives of your church? Please paste the link:
Mission: We exist to lead every generation to a full life in Christ.
Values:
Biblically Anchored
Selfless Service
Radical Generosity
Missionally Minded
Intentional Gathering
Please describe the current staff structure.
We are a staff-driven, elder-overseen church. Currently, our staff is divided up into pastors/directors and staff members. Our pastors/directors serve as “ministry leads” over our different departments (kids, students, adults, worship/arts, etc.). Our staff members support those ministry leads in whatever their role is. We also have a handful of volunteer directors for some of our adult ministries (women’s ministry director, senior adults pastor, etc.).
Current staff is…
Lead Pastor
Executive Pastor
Worship Pastor
Student Pastor
Children’s Ministry Director
Production Director
Office Manager
Facilities Technician
What qualities does it take to “win” on staff at your church?
As previously mentioned, we’re big here on “work hard, rest hard.” So a win on staff here is when someone does their job well and takes care of their responsibilities in good time, and then rests and enjoys their time off when appropriate. We also have a big staff culture here of “saying yes,” meaning when other staff members need help with various items, we want to “say yes” and help them out as a team. Other qualities include a willingness to learn, emotionally mature, a teachable spirit, and a relaxed personality that enjoys working with others on a team.
Who will the resident report to? Will there be a different person acting as coach?
The resident will report to the Executive Pastor, who they will primarily work with. However, given the general “pastoral” nature of this residency, they will also work with the other pastors/ministry leads on various tasks.
Are there particular assessment tools that you prefer when exploring potential staff people?
The past few years our staff has identified our Enneagram numbers as well as surveyed our DISC profiles.
What are the key doctrinal and theological issues where alignment is essential?
As a church a part of the Restoration Movement, we heavily emphasize the following…
Weekly communion
Baptism by immersion
Elder-led governance
Biblically-defined roles for gender, marriage, and family
Overall, we simply want a resident who can come alongside us in our mission and support the overall beliefs of the church as we seek to do ministry in our community.
What is your average weekend attendance?
We average approximately 650 attendees between our three Sunday morning services. We also have a couple dozen attendees online.
In general, what is your church demographic?
We are a very intergenerational church located in the southern suburbs of the Denver metro area. There are lots of families here, both young and old, as well as older adults, empty nesters, and senior adults.
Is there more than one site or venue? If so, please describe.
No.
How many conversions has your church had in the past 12 months? (however you define this and whatever you count)
We have had approximately two dozen baptisms this past year, which is our typical indicator for “official” conversions.
What percentage of people are involved in a small group?
Between ongoing small groups, semester Bible studies, or one-off classes, about half of our church is engaged in small group discipleship opportunities.
What is your church known for in the community?
Great Sunday services with strong, biblical teaching, tangible opportunities for discipleship, and intentional fellowship events for families and community members. We are also known as “the church on the hill” given our physical presence overlooking a valley at the base of the Rocky Mountains! :D
How much are you planning on financially compensating your resident? Is it set or is it flexible?
We have allotted $1,250/month for a resident and will assist them in providing housing accommodations.
What are the expected work hours and what does a typical workweek look like for this resident?
We anticipate this residency being mostly full-time. While work hours in ministry can vary, our typical workweek is as follows…
Sunday = 7:00a-12:30p
Monday = 9:00a-4:00p
Tuesday = 9:00a-4:00p
Wednesdays = 9:00a-8:00p
Thursdays = 9:00a-4:00p
Fridays = off
Saturdays = off
Wednesdays are long days because of our midweek programming. Additionally, there will be times where the resident is expected to work outside of these hours in the evenings or on the weekends, primarily to help with various ministry events (e.g. men’s breakfast, fall festival, retreats, new members class, etc.). These hours are usually offset the following week to compensate.
What else would you say to a resident considering joining your team?
We’d love to have you here at Valley View! This is a good church full of good people. The staff here is great and our future is exciting with all the growth and expansion we’re experiencing. This residency will be an incredibly opportunity to ride the wave of ministry growth while gaining some incredibly practical ministry experience.
